There's something about the Grammys that always makes me feel ... I dunno ... maybe old. Lots of post-Disney over-produced, heavy on the auto-tune, couldn't-sight-read-a-note, can't-play-an-instrument tweenagers running around, proclaiming earnestly how the last year and their first album "that's just about to drop" was "all about becoming a woman and learning about the world" and other such platitudes. That said, I'm glad I pulled up a chair. There were some fun parts tonight. Some thoughts, notes and suggestions in no particular order. 1. If I were a dude and invited to the show, I would - at the very least - put on a suit and tie. Talking to you, O'Sheas. But then again, I'm old-fashioned that way. I also wouldn't wear a dress that makes me look like I'm for hire, but let's not get sidetracked. 2. I think Hollywood has run out of spray-tan. Holy cow. Everyone falls somewhere on the spectrum d' orange. 3. I like this pattern of sticking John Legend at the grand piano. 4. Yay for the Lionel revival. Guy deserves it. 5. Should we forward slash the Grammys to be The Grammys/Taylor Swift's Show? It's pretty much her show every year, isn't it? I don't mean so much winning all the awards, I mean that she's always front and center in the audience, she's all over the red carpet with her squad members, she performs at least a few songs, presents a few awards - she's pretty much co-producing the show at this point. 6. Really enjoyed the musical performances tonight. 7. Hamilton: I believe this is the closest we'll get to seeing Hamilton! Assuming it's sold out until 2030 or so? 8. What's the real story behind Rhianna's absence? Another Chris Brown "date?" Ugh - I don't mean to be mean, but I just can't abide this whole, "You don't understand our love" endorsement of domestic violence. 9. I wonder if Bruno Mars ever met Sandra Bullock's sweet little daughter? I thought it was so precious that she adores "Bwuno Mahs." 10. Kaley Cuoco must have the best agent in the business. 11. I truly wish I didn't enjoy Bieber's performance so much. Couldn't it just be anyone but Bieber? 12. Um ... Ed Sheeran ... run a comb through your hair? It's just that - well, you're on STAGE. And the lights are on. More specifically, they're on YOU. 13. Bonnie Raitt. AT LAST they let a woman play like a man. Or should I say - better? 14. Oh my God. What ...? I just can't with this Hollywood Vampires thing. I just ... can't. 15. So sweet that Meghan Trainor's dad was there when she won her Best New Artist Award. He was crying, she was crying. Touching. Fun show. Goodnight! Little Big Town DAMN. Hands down, the most E-L-E-G-A-N-T group at the Grammys. Nice to see some more mature folks bringing experience and style to the party. Zendaya Best dressed! Loving the sleek tuxedo. AdeleAwwww ... I'm loving Adele in her more "Au-naturel" look. Don't get me wrong, I love her fun beehives and what not, but I'm loving this sweet look. Her hair is lovely, and she looks so happy. Common
Alabama ShakesLove the recognition: love the funk. Love the front woman. Musicians! Musicians who play instruments! See what a difference that makes, music industry? What a breath of fresh air after a year of engineered hits. More, more, more! Gaga How I miss David Bowie. What a legacy the man left. He was a true visionary. Icon. Not enough words. If someone is going to attempt to do a tribute in 5 minutes or less, Gaga is definitely the way to go. But I'm just reminded that the man was on another planet in another solar system. The Guys Are Bringin' It Taylor Swift Congrats on Album of the Year, Tay Tay! Hey - whatever the meaning behind it, this is a nice speech and a good takeaway for anyone. "As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: there will people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you're going you'll look around and you'll know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment." Also - if you really want to see the amazing (musical) structure and construction the entire 1989 album, listen to Ryan Adams' rendition. It will open your eyes.

GulianaGuiliana opens the Red Carpet, and game gotta recognize game!! Girl looks fabulous. I am loving this new(?) - new to me, at least - design house she chose, the New Delhi-based Gauri and Nainika. Lovely and just right for hosting responsibilities. And tea length! Yes, I say. Love the hair and the styling as well. Lovely and polished look. Tony HaleI'm just going to go in order o' appearance here. Well played, Tony Hale, who will always be Buster Bluth to me. I love me a velvet tux, and I always will. Keeping it classy in Tommy Hilfiger. Kiernan ShipkaKiernan in Erdem. Adorable and age-appropriate. I covet this cutie's wardrobe. I'm always surprised that the Mad Men cast continues to show up. Didn't the show end like forever ago? It's 2016, people. Why do we keep dragging this lineup out? Can we just put it out to pasture already? Ellie KemperI love how fresh and cool this is. Dress by Peter Pilatto. I would just change one major thing: make it tea length, and it's perfect. Ellie's so twee and petite, and the full skirt rather swallows her. Cut it off to tea length, and this is a red carpet winner. I think this is the first Peter Pilatto I've ever seen on the carpet - I hope we see more! Eva Longoria
Brie LarsonBrie in Versace. Usually VerSAYCE can be a bit much, a bit over the top. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's really something only people like J Lo can pull off. But this really works on miss Brie, who really seems to be having a transcendent year. This is the sort of choice she'll look back on 50 years from now and say, "Mmmhmm. Yes. I rocked it." | I miss Amanda Peet in comedic roles. What's with all the drama and sadness? Enough already. She's so fun - Hollywood, bring back fun Amanda! I was happy to see her roll through the red carpet. She looks California chill and relaxed and effortlessly gorgeous. |
You know, if my life was a hot mess and people were wondering what the hell was wrong with my dude radar, I would show up at a party like this. She looks like a million bucks. You go, girl. I hope the dude thing works out, but in the meantime, keep on rockin' in the free world.
Naomi Watts and Rachael McAdams. Can I have your stylists' number? Thanks!
I'm truly conflicted. I really loved Donna from That 70s Show. And I was happy to see L Preps pop up on OITNB as super fierce Alex. But the work she's done on her face just saddens me. If she was going for Hollywood Filler Bot, she's succeeded. I'm bummed to see yet another unique, cool gal succumb to Hollywood sameness.
Wow. The guys really brought it tonight, didn’t they? Sharp suits, fine fabric, great cuts, and impeccable tailoring - well done, menz! And as Idris Elba says, “It’s nice to be described as sexy.” It sure is, Idris. It sure is.
